Root Canal Therapy

A happy older man

A tooth may require root canal therapy when deep decay, cracked teeth, trauma, or large existing fillings reach the central pulp chamber where the nerve resides. When bacteria enter these inner channels, it can cause severe sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweets, as well as persistent pain or abscess formation. If a recommended root canal is delayed or left untreated, the infection can lead to swelling, a bad taste in the mouth, progressive bone loss around the root, and eventual tooth loss.

The Root Canal Procedure

During root canal treatment, Dr. Don B. Ruhnke, DDS gently removes the infected nerve tissue from inside the tooth, cleans and disinfects the internal canals with antibacterial solutions, and seals the space securely. After the procedure, a core build-up and custom dental crown are typically recommended—especially for back molars—to restore full strength and protect the tooth from future fractures.

Despite their past reputation, modern root canal procedures are usually no more uncomfortable than receiving a standard filling or crown. Our priority is keeping you completely comfortable while eliminating pain and saving your natural tooth.
